Revoke AFSPA
We believe in civil liberties. The State cannot suppress people's right to justice and due legal process, by using emergency measures. Especially not when such emergency measures last for a long time.
We believe Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) should be repealed and no immunity need be given to Armed Forces personnel, via a Special Powers act.
However, as Liberals, we understand the issue is complex and do not want to be rigid in our stance. AFSPA is currently imposed in various parts of the Union, almost always unnecessarily. Revoking AFSPA, is a reasonable first step.
We urge fellow liberals to peruse the following reports and take a stand on their own.
1. Report of the Justice B P Jeevan Reddy committee appointed by the Supreme Court. It recommended repealing AFSPA and instead inserting appropriate provisions in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The report was submitted in 2005.
